Happy Chinese New Year of the Dog!

恭喜發財!Gong Xi Fa Cai!  This is a very popular (and proper!) way to greet each other during Chinese New Year.  It means wishing you to be prosperous in the coming year.  Children are most excited to say it to everyone, especially the older generations, because then they will receive Red Pocket hóngbāo 紅包 or 利是.  These red envelopes contain money and represents luck and happiness.

2018 is the Year of the Dog.  Are you a dog?  Years of the Dog include 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, 1946, 1934… and so on, every 12-year cycle.

If you’re born in a Dog year, you’re a Dog, and the following are deemed lucky for you:

  • Lucky numbers: 3, 4, 9
  • Lucky colors: red, green, and purple
  • Lucky flowers: rose, cymbidium orchids

Just like the animal, Dogs are loyal and honest, amiable and kind, cautious and prudent. Due to having a strong sense of loyalty and sincerity, Dogs will do everything for the person who they think is most important.

Born with a good nature, Dogs are always ready to help others and do not care about their own interests, but if they find themselves betrayed by cunning people they will feel shocked and hurt.
